GUESS WHAT! I started a garden. A real one. With veggies and cut flowers and planter boxes and everything.
I’ve been dreaming about growing my own little backyard garden for years, and we finally did it. And you guys — it’s been SO rewarding.
First things first: the raised beds. I found four planter boxes on Facebook Marketplace (each one is 4’x2’x2′). Instead of filling them completely with soil (which can get pricey fast), we filled the bottom half with organic matter — think old leaves, branches, and sticks.
Then we topped it off with some soil I picked up from Green Acres. Here’s what we used and how we split it:
Total: $82.00
Total: $47.00
Grand total for soil: $129.00
Not bad for four fully loaded beds!
For the veggies, we went with a mix of favorites and beginner-friendly plants. We planted:
For the flowers, I had a little more fun with it. I used the chaos garden method — which basically means I just tossed a bunch of seeds into the soil and let nature do its thing. I planted:
We’ve been watering daily, and WOW — the growth has been insane. The tomatoes are getting tall, the cucumbers are flowering, and the zucchini is on its away to taking over the entire backyard. It’s so satisfying to peek outside each day and see something new popping up.
This little garden has become my happy place. It’s low-key therapeutic, and honestly, I can’t wait to start harvesting and making salads straight from the backyard.
If you’ve ever thought about starting a garden — do it! Even if you just start with one box, it’s 100% worth it. 🌱✨
