DIY Summer Picnic: What to Pack & Where to Go in Sacramento

There’s something about a summer picnic that just feels so right—whether it’s a last-minute decision on a lazy Sunday or a fully planned Pinterest-worthy afternoon with your besties. And in Sacramento, with all our gorgeous parks and golden-hour light, we’re kind of spoiled for perfect picnic spots.

So if you’re itching to get outside and romanticize your summer life a little, here’s your guide to planning a dreamy DIY picnic—complete with what to pack and where to go.

🧺 What to Pack for Your Picnic

First things first: you do not need to overcomplicate this. A good picnic is really just great snacks, comfy vibes, and a spot with a breeze.

Essentials:

  • A cute blanket (bonus points for gingham or stripes)
  • A cooler tote or basket
  • Reusable utensils & napkins
  • Plates or trays (so your brie doesn’t roll away)
  • Water (always water)
  • A trash bag for clean-up

Food Ideas:

  • Fresh fruit (grapes, strawberries, watermelon… all the juicy things)
  • Charcuterie fixings: cheese, salami, crackers, olives
  • A couple of deli sandwiches or wraps from Selland’s or Corti Brothers
  • Chips & guac or hummus
  • Something sweet (cookies, brownies, or a pastry from Faria Bakery)

Drinks:

  • Canned wine or bubbly (if allowed where you’re going!)
  • Sparkling water
  • Iced tea or lemonade in a mason jar because, yes, we’re that girl

Optional but fun:

  • A speaker for music
  • A card game or book
  • A Frisbee, gloves & ball for catch?
  • A mini bouquet or flowers in a jar—just for the vibe

🌳 Best Picnic Spots in Sacramento

Now for the fun part—where to plop down and pop open that rosé.

McKinley Park

Classic, shady, and full of people-watching. Set up near the rose garden if you want bonus aesthetic points.

Southside Park

This one’s close to downtown and great for families or friend groups. There’s a pond, a playground, and lots of trees for shade.

Capitol Park

In the heart of it all. Tons of grassy spots and beautifully manicured gardens. Plus, the Capitol building as your backdrop? Chic.

William Land Park

Sprawling, shaded, and full of charm.

UC Davis Arboretum

Okay, a tiny trek but still local. Peaceful, pretty, and full of hidden spots to relax under the trees.

🌞 Final Picnic Tips

  • Go in the morning or later in the afternoon to beat the heat.
  • Don’t forget SPF, even if you’re in the shade.
  • Bring a small cutting board if you’re doing a full-on snack board situation.
  • Snap a pic for the memories (and tag me @maddyjedmunds if you do!).

Summer is fleeting, but picnics are forever. Okay, not forever, but they’re one of those simple joys that make the season feel special. Whether you’re going full cottagecore or keeping it casual, just get out there and enjoy it. You’ve earned it.
