Free & Affordable Things to Do in Sacramento

If you’re craving a little culture, nature, or history without spending a ton of money, Sacramento totally delivers. Whether you’re a local looking for something new or hosting out-of-town friends, here are some of my favorite free or super cheap things to do in the Sacramento County area that are interesting, full of charm, and totally worth your time.

🎨 Arts & Culture

Second Saturday Art Walk (Midtown)
Once a month, Midtown turns into a full-on art block party. Galleries open their doors late, there’s live music, food pop-ups, and the sidewalks are packed with energy.

Crocker Art Museum
Normally $15, but check for community days and “Pay What You Wish” programs! The museum is a stunning blend of classic and modern art, with a beautiful outdoor courtyard.

Sojourner Truth African Heritage Museum
Located in Florin Square, this donation-based museum showcases Black art, history, and storytelling. They also host community events and rotating exhibits.

Sacramento Murals Walk
Sacramento has over 800 murals, and this self-guided tour lets you explore them all. Grab a coffee and hit the streets of Midtown, Oak Park, or Downtown.

🏫 History & Education

California State Capitol Museum & Gardens
You can tour the Capitol for free! Explore the museum inside, then wander the rose gardens and memorials out back.

Old Sacramento Waterfront
Stroll along cobblestone streets, visit quirky shops, watch the river, and take in the Wild West vibes — all for free.

Sacramento Historic City Cemetery
Yes, a cemetery. But it’s beautiful, peaceful, and full of Sacramento history. They even offer free historical walking tours.

Folsom History Museum & Pioneer Village
Just a few bucks to get in, and you’ll get a dose of Gold Rush history, hands-on exhibits, and charming old-town vibes.

🌿 Nature + Outdoors

Effie Yeaw Nature Center (Carmichael)
A favorite for families or a solo reset day. Donation-based, with easy trails, wildlife spotting (deer, wild turkeys!), and lots of shade.

Nimbus Fish Hatchery
Free and fun to explore, especially during salmon spawning season. The fish ladder is so cool to see in action, and there’s a nice walking path nearby.

McKinley Park Rose Garden
It’s a literal breath of fresh air in East Sac. Bring a book, a picnic, or your camera — the roses bloom like crazy in spring.

William Land Park & Funderland
Explore the park for free, or pop into Funderland for classic, low-cost rides if you have kiddos in tow.

🎶 Music & Community Events

Concerts in the Park
Friday nights in the summer = free live music downtown with food trucks, drinks, and local bands. Such a fun vibe.

Oak Park First Fridays & Night Market
Think food vendors, makers markets, DJs, and community vibes. Free and full of flavor.

Free Yoga by Yoga Moves Us
FREE Yoga in the park on different days, all over Sacramento.

Sacramento has so much going on if you know where to look. Whether you’re a history buff, art lover, nature walker, or just someone who loves free stuff, there’s something on this list for you. Bookmark this, send it to your group chat, and go explore!

This is a good list. If you follow parks and rec district instagrams in the area, there’s lots of free events happening all the time like concerts, movies in the park, food truck nights, comedy, and lots more.
