How to Meet New People When You Move to a New City

Real things I did to build community in Sacramento

When I first moved to Sacramento, I didn’t have a built-in crew. I had to build my community from scratch—and if you’re in that same boat, I promise you, it’s totally possible (and honestly kind of fun).

Here’s how I actually met people and started making connections in a brand-new city:

1. Go Where the Events Are: Facebook, MeetUp & Eventbrite Are Your Friends

I’m not kidding—Facebook events and MeetUp helped me find everything from book clubs to happy hours. I’d type in “Sacramento” and scroll through whatever popped up that weekend. Eventbrite is another hidden gem for things like free workshops, pop-up markets, and community panels.

It’s the easiest way to find people doing the kinds of things you like to do—and it takes some pressure off, because everyone there is usually open to chatting.

Tip: Pick one event a week and just go. You don’t have to stay the whole time—just showing up puts you in new spaces with new people.

2. Join a Rec League (Even if You Haven’t Played Since High School)

Signing up for a rec league was one of the most fun and low-pressure ways I made friends in Sacramento. I joined a co-ed soccer league team through XOSO—despite not having played in a while—and then later a softball team. Both ended up being such great ways to meet people outside of work and see the same faces every week.

The vibes are super casual (seriously, no one cares if you’re rusty), and the post-game hangs are where a lot of the bonding happens. Whether you’re naturally competitive or just want to run around and laugh with new people, co-ed rec leagues are such a fun way to plug into your local community. Bonus: XOSO has happy hour perks and social events off the field, too.

3. Go to Networking Events (Yes, Even If You’re an Introvert)

Networking doesn’t have to be stuffy or awkward. Think of it more as “social friend-making with a professional twist.” In Sacramento, I found a few creative networking events like Creative Mornings where the energy was less about exchanging business cards and more about finding your people.

Most of the time, these events have a theme (brunch, a panel, a vision board) which makes it easier to start conversations and connect over something specific.

4. Get a Part-Time Job (I Know It Sounds Wild, But Hear Me Out)

Okay, this one might sound a little out there—but one of the easiest ways I made connections was through a part-time job. I picked up a hosting shift at Sauced (believe it or not), and I made a few friends.

It gave me structure, extra income, and people. When you’re new in town, working somewhere social—like a local restaurant, coffee shop, a fitness studio, or even at local events—can plug you straight into the community.

5. Be Bold About Your Intentions

I know it feels awkward to say “I’m trying to make friends,” but honestly? People respect the honesty. I’ve told people straight up, “I’m new here and looking to meet cool people—know of any fun stuff going on?” 9/10 times, they’re down to connect or recommend something.

Being open about wanting connection helps people know how to support you—and it invites more genuine friendships.

Making friends as an adult isn’t always easy, but it’s not impossible either. All it takes is a little curiosity, a touch of courage, and the willingness to say “yes” to the unfamiliar. Whether you’re signing up for a kickball team or chatting with a stranger at a candle-making class, you never know where a new connection might lead.

And if you’re in Sacramento (or moving here soon), I’m always sharing my favorite local recs, cozy hangs, and community events—so don’t be a stranger. 💛
